Google AdWords which brings approximately $100 billion in revenue each year for the company, now becoming simply Google Ads. Starting from July 24, 2018, we will start to see the new name in its advertising platform.
Started on October 23, 2000, within this 17+ years Google improved & developed search, display, video, mobile, shopping, app installs ads on this platform. On an interview with search engine land, Sridhar Ramaswamy, senior VP of ads & commerce of Google said.
“With Google Ads as opposed to Google AdWords, it is moving the imperceptible default opinion that you get as an advertiser when you hear ‘Google AdWords’ … you think, ‘Oh, Words. Search.’ It’s basically a slight cognitive dissonance to all the other great things that we are doing in terms of both the format and surfaces these ads can show. And so, Google Ads, in our opinion, is a much more straightforward representation of what Google advertising can provide. It’s that simplicity and alignment of the core message from the first instant you hear the name, which is the goal.”
So Google’s main motivation here is to provide a simple solution to advertisers in terms of the name & interface. The new name will not affect the previous campaigns & settings which you have previously. We have seen new Google AdWords interface is there around almost a year now. The new interface is in beta and most probably with the new name they will finally make it as default.
The new interface is to provide easy UI & navigation to new users & small business owners. Google always tried & still working on providing better & easy solution to small businesses who have limited resources. With this new rebranding, Google introducing smart campaigns for small businesses.

Smart campaigns are the new default campaign type for new advertisers in Google Ads. Google implements AI to help small business owners to start easily with the first ad campaign. Smart campaigns are designed for small & local businesses to get started with ads without having dedicated marketing staff.
Businesses without websites can also be benefitted from smart campaigns. It will work with Google My Business for ad creation, image, contact info and landing page. Google will generate a landing page based upon the goals of the business automatically. This will help convert leads to sales easily and Google will provide reporting of the landing page too. Google announced in 2015 that there are more searches from mobile on Google than desktops. As the usage of smartphone increases daily it has become necessary to give advertisers seamless experience in both mobile & desktop. So they developed the new interface to provide that experience and also improve chances to reach more people across all devices from its ads platform. It will give similar UI, navigation and experience in both mobile & desktop version of ads to increase accessibility for advertisers.
So the new name will not impact any of previous settings, although it will improve the user experience and reduces confusions for new users.
